1. Calvario
The original Calvario monument was built between 1944 and 1947, featuring three shrines (edicole). Over time, the artwork within them completely faded away. As restoring the original images was impossible, the municipal administration led by Mayor Domenico Licastro commissioned artist Domenico Papalia in 2004 to completely restore the monument. The goal was to create three new shrines that would blend profound religious imagery with an elegant visual landmark for the town of Delianuova.
The First Panel depicts Saint John and the Virgin Mary. Their posture captures the deep grief of human separation, while simultaneously conveying the absolute certainty of Jesus rising to a new life.
The Second Panel portrays Jesus emerging from a chalice, symbolizing the convergence of His dual nature—both human and divine. The two Marys are depicted on either side of the chalice.
The Third Panel shows Jesus on the cross, depicted without the crown of thorns. On either side, two angels support Him, easing the weight of His suffering as a testament to humanity that God never abandons His children.
The restored monument was officially inaugurated on May 3, 2025.
