AUTUMN IN DELIANUOVA

Autumn in Delianuova is a triumph of flavors and traditions—an authentic journey through ancient tastes and living heritage, immersed in a landscape that enchants the soul.

When the Aspromonte mountains dress in warm autumn colors, Delianuova transforms into a stage of unique scents. The air fills with the intense aroma of local wild mushrooms, renowned for their unmistakable flavor.

As the season progresses, the surrounding countryside comes alive with the olive harvest, the prelude to the production of extra virgin olive oil, which has always held the essence of this land. In ancient times, mushrooms, oil, and chestnuts were the beating heart of the local economy, used as currency with merchants arriving from the Gioia Tauro Plain. Today, these natural treasures are celebrated at “La Vecchia Segheria” and “Lo Chalet” restaurants, where Deliese culinary tradition shines.

Autumn Fests:

  • The Saint Archangel Fair (Fiera di Sant’Arcangelo – Last Sunday of October): A dive into the rural past, where old-world trade routes revive among the market stalls, packed with typical products and traditional sweets.
  • The Feast of Saint Nicholas (Festa di San Nicola – December 6): Celebrated in Pedavoli at the church of the same name. Following the mass, the traditional distribution of chickpeas takes place—a gesture of sharing deeply rooted in local history. This simple food, a symbol of humility and abundance, is offered to the faithful, uniting the community.

WINTER IN DELIANUOVA

Winter in Delianuova can be cold and occasionally brings heavy snowfall. The crisp temperatures, which often drop below freezing, transform the village into an enchanted place where time seems to slow down.

During the Christmas season, the town streets fill with a festive atmosphere, and many gather to taste the famous artisanal torrone from Pasticceria Scutellà. Since 1930, this family-run laboratory has handcrafted a sweet that has become a symbol of local tradition.

When snow whitens the peaks of the Aspromonte, many locals venture to nearby Gambarie, located about 25 kilometers away. This renowned ski resort offers snowy slopes for all skill levels, where winter sports enthusiasts can take in breathtaking views. On clear days, the view stretches all the way to the Strait of Messina. Skiing with a view of the sea is a privilege that very few places in the world can offer.

As spring approaches, March 19 marks the Feast of Saint Joseph (Festa di San Giuseppe), another occasion to celebrate Deliese culinary tradition. Tables are filled with “dita di Apostolo” (sponge fingers filled with delicate cream) and “zeppole di San Giuseppe” (soft, golden fried pastries). You can find these seasonal treats at Pasticceria Carbone—famous for the Deliese—and the aforementioned Pasticceria Scutellà.
